Information for Potential Candidates

If you plan on running in the 2018 Municipal Election, here is some important information for you.

  • The term of office for all elected candidates is four years
  • The positions of the Mayor and Council in the City of Winkler are deemed "at-large” positions, which means that each individual elected represents the City of Winkler as a whole, and not a particular ward or section of the community. One (1) Mayor candidate and six (6) Councillor candidates are elected from over 7000 city-wide eligible voters.
  • For registration applications and/or nomination papers, please contact the Senior Election Official at City Hall.


Qualifications of Candidates

  • A Canadian citizen
  • At least 18 years of age on the day of the election
  • A resident of Manitoba
  • An eligible voter in the City of Winkler (to qualify as a voter you must be a resident or property owner in the municipality for at least six months before Election Day)

You can best familiarize yourself with the duties of council by talking to members of Council or Administration; by spending some time reading Council minutes and agendas and by reviewing the City of Winkler website for more information.

Everyone is welcome to attend Council meetings. Meetings are held the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of each month at 6:30 pm in Council Chambers at 185 Main Street. Committee of the Whole Meetings are held every 4th Tuesday of the month in the afternoon. Both agendas for these meetings are available on the City of Winkler website the Friday before the meeting.
