2018 Elections

Municipal Elections are held on the fourth Wednesday in October every four years.The next general municipal election will be held on Wednesday, October 24th, 2018.

CITY OF WINKLER

NOTICE OF NOMINATIONS

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on the following days:

September 12, 13, 14, 17 and 18, 2018

between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the following location, 185 Main Street, Winkler, Manitoba, I will receive nominations for the offices of Mayor and Councillors of the aforesaid Local Authority.

The nomination deadline is September 18, 2018 at 5:00 pm. Nominations cannot be accepted after this day.

All nominations shall be made in writing and shall be signed by at least twenty-five voters, of the authority. Each nomination shall also be accompanied by the candidate’s declaration of qualification.

Nominations may be filed in person, by an agent, or by fax, at the above location, on the date and hours specified. To obtain a nomination paper, and/or candidate’s declaration of qualification, contact the S.E.O. at the telephone number listed below.

Nomination papers not accompanied by the required documents and not properly filed shall be rejected.

NOTICE OF VOTERS LIST

Notice is hereby given that a copy of the VOTERS LIST may be revised at:

185 Main Street, Winkler, Manitoba no later than September 18, 2018, between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

The Senior Election Official (S.E.O.) will be available to update the voters list by:

(a) Adding the names of voters who are entitled to have their names on the list;

(b) Deleting the names of persons who are not entitled to have their names on the list; and

(c) Making such other correction of errors to the list as required.

VOTER ELIGIBILITY;

A PERSON IS ELIGIBLE TO HAVE HIS OR HER NAME ADDED TO THE Voters List if he or she is:

1) A Canadian citizen and at least 18 years of age on election day; and

2) A resident of the local authority for at least six months prior to election day, OR a registered owner of land in the municipality for at least six months prior to election day.

APPLICATION FOR PERSONAL SECURITY PROTECTION:

A voter may apply in writing to the S.E.O. (at the address/fax number below) no later than September 18, 2018 to have his/her name and other personal information omitted or obscured from the voters list in order to protect the voter’s personal security. The application may be submitted in person, by mail or fax and must include your name, address and include proof of identity.

All changes to the voters list must be completed on or before September 18, 2018.

APPLICATION TO VOTE BY SEALED ENVELOPE

A voter who is unable to go in person to the voting place or vote in advance, may apply in person, in writing, or by fax to the senior election official at 185 Main Street, Winkler, MB R6W 1B4, fax: (204) 325-5915.

If applying in person*, a voter may apply between September 26th, 2018 and October 19th, 2018.

* A voter applying in person may pick up a sealed envelope ballot package at the time of application.

If applying by mail or fax**, a voter may apply between July 26th, 2018 and October 19th, 2018.

** A voter applying by mail or fax will receive a sealed envelope ballot package by regular post, or by making alternative arrangements with the senior election official.

Information for Potential Candidates

If you plan on running in the 2018 Municipal Election, here is some important information for you.

  • The term of office for all elected candidates is four years
  • The positions of the Mayor and Council in the City of Winkler are deemed "at-large” positions, which means that each individual elected represents the City of Winkler as a whole, and not a particular ward or section of the community. One (1) Mayor candidate and six (6) Councillor candidates are elected from over 7000 city-wide eligible voters.
  • For registration applications and/or nomination papers, please contact the Senior Election Official at City Hall.

Qualifications of Candidates

  • A Canadian citizen
  • At least 18 years of age on the day of the election
  • A resident of Manitoba
  • An eligible voter in the City of Winkler (to qualify as a voter you must be a resident or property owner in the municipality for at least six months before Election Day)

You can best familiarize yourself with the duties of council by talking to members of Council or Administration; by spending some time reading Council minutes and agendas and by reviewing the City of Winkler website for more information.

Everyone is welcome to attend Council meetings. Meetings are held the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of each month at 6:30 pm in Council Chambers at 185 Main Street. Committee of the Whole Meetings are held every 4th Tuesday of the month in the afternoon. Both agendas for these meetings are available on the City of Winkler website the Monday before the meeting.
